How My Future Fund works
My Future Fund is Ireland's mandatory auto-enrolment pension scheme, live from January 2026. If you are an employee aged 23 to 60, earning EUR20,000 or more and not already paying into a workplace pension, you are automatically enrolled. Your employer must match your contributions, and the Irish State adds a top-up on top of that.
The three-way contribution
For every EUR1 you put in during Phase 1, your employer adds EUR1 and the State adds EUR0.33. That means for every EUR1 you contribute, EUR2.33 goes into your pot. Contributions apply to earnings up to EUR80,000 - anything above that threshold is not matched by your employer or the State, though you can still contribute yourself.
Is it taxed?
Unlike a traditional PRSA or occupational pension, My Future Fund contributions are not tax-relieved at source. You pay your 1.5% from your after-tax income. The State top-up is the government's way of replacing that tax relief. For standard rate (20%) taxpayers the State top-up is broadly equivalent to tax relief. For higher rate (40%) taxpayers, a traditional pension with marginal rate relief can be more valuable - but only if your employer also matches contributions there.
Contribution phases
| Phase | Years | Employee | Employer | State | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2026-2028 | 1.5% | 1.5% | 0.5% | 3.5% |
| 2 | 2029-2031 | 3% | 3% | 1% | 7% |
| 3 | 2032-2034 | 4.5% | 4.5% | 1.5% | 10.5% |
| 4 | 2035+ | 6% | 6% | 2% | 14% |
Can I opt out?
Yes, but not immediately. After six months of contributions you can opt out during a two-month window (months 7 and 8). If you opt out you get your own contributions back but lose the employer and State contributions. You will be automatically re-enrolled every two years if you are still eligible.
